Alan's Story

Text size

Alan James Roby, 74, of Cumberland, passed away at the Cumberland Nursing Home on Nov. 9, 2017, after a year-long battle with colon cancer.
Alan was preceded in death by his parents James M. Roby and Audrey J. Pittman. He is survived by his sister Brenda Roby; his brother-in-law Bernard Deal; his three nephews Bryce, Blair, and Benn Deal; and his precious cat Raven.
Born Sept. 27, 1943, Alan was a 1961 graduate of Fort Hill High School where he was active in the Science Club and the Student Council. During high school, he earned his FCC credentials and hosted his own radio show "Teen Tempest" on WCUM every weekend. He played records of the latest hits and read phoned-in dedication and music requests.
After high school, Alan attended Indiana Tech and West Virginia Tech before enlisting in the Navy where he attended tech training school and served a tour of duty in Viet Nam as an electronics technician during the war.
Following his military service, Alan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education from Frostburg University and taught at Head Start. He also worked at Sacred Heart Hospital. He eventually got back to his real love: electronics. He worked for several area businesses in cell phone and security services.
Alan was very active with his 1961 graduating class reunions. He prepared a souvenir booklet for attendees each year.
Always creative and innovative, Alan designed and built furniture, painted wall hangings, designed and installed creative interior lighting, including the living room of his parents' home, and created artistic room interiors, including the foyer of his sister's home.
Per Alan's request, no viewing, service, or memorial is scheduled. He would want family and friends to celebrate their personal association with him with joy and to remember him with fondness.
Friends wishing to honor Alan are encouraged to make a contribution to the Allegany County Animal Shelter in his name.
Our brother, uncle, and friend: "Time with you was always special. You are loved, cherished, and missed."
