Alan Jeffrey Walters, 62, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 30, 1955, in Cumberland to Betty and Harold "Buck" Walters. He graduated from Fort Hill in 1973 and is fondly remembered as a basketball allstar, having participated in the school's state championship team his senior year. He went on to attend Allegany Community College, where he continued to entertain with his basketball prowess. He subsequently won a basketball scholarship to Washington College but graduated from Frostburg State in 1978 with a degree in social science.
Having failed at establishing a successful Social Science shop, he began working at O'Sullivan Film Corps in Winchester, Va., in 1978, where he remained employed until 2015.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 31 years, Jeanie, in 2016.
He is survived by brothers, Gary Walters of Leland, N.C., and Denny Walters of Cumberland, and Jim of parts unknown; brother-in-law, Charlie Lanham of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; daughter, Tara, and son-in-law, Ryan, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; in-laws Charles "Red" and Rena Lanham of Cumberland, and a Maltese named Levi; in addition to nieces, Laura and Audrey Walters of LaVale and Cumberland, respectively.
Per his wishes, his body was donated to science, and there will be no funeral. A "celebration of life" ceremony is being planned, and friends and family are encouraged to keep an eye on Facebook for details. Additionally, a basketball scholarship in his honor will hopefully materialize at Allegany College of Maryland in the near future. Stay tuned.
