Alta's Story

Alta Rhea (Hare) Birkby, 72, of Grantsville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, at her home.
Born Aug. 30, 1945, in Grantsville, she was the daughter of the late Sherman and Etta (Bittinger) Hare. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alan Robert Birkby, July 12, 2009; five brothers, Sylvan, Dwight, Basil, Denzil and Samuel Hare; and four sisters, Helena Resh, Bernice Broadwater Rounds, Delta Broadwater and Erma Jones.
Alta was honored to be a member of the fiddling Hare family. She was a member of Harvest Baptist Church, taught Sunday School and was a member of the Ladies Fellowship. Alta was employed as a school bus driver for Garrett County Board of Education and also an instructional assistant for the Board of Education. Her memberships included the NEA, GCEA, MSEA, Grantsville Firemen's Auxiliary and the Old Time Fiddlers Association of Pennsylvania.
She is survived by a son, Philip Alan (Kimberly) Birkby; two daughters, Michele Ann (Radford) Birkby-Vance and Jennifer Grace (William) Meyers, all of Grantsville; two brothers, Dalton Hare, Grantsville, and Adam Hare, College Park; six grandchildren, Ashley Bender, Rachel Birkby, Justin Meyers, Emily Meyers, Rebecca Meyers and Joshua Meyers; and five great-grandchildren, Bryson Bender, Neil Bender, Caleb Bender, Lola Meyers and Leo Meyers.
Friends will be received at Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018, from 5 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Donny Hinkle and Pastor Larry "Butch" Glotfelty officiating.
Interment will be in Grantsville Cemetery.
