Annie's Story

CUMBERLAND Annie Alta Rice, 98, of Cumberland, went into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 8, 1918, in Cumberland, Mrs. Rice was the daughter of the late Daniel Duncan and Matilda L. (Wilson) McElfish. She was also preceded in death by her husband, W. Lester Rice; a sister, Grace Maxey; a brother, Charles "Bud" McElfish; a special friend, Roy Twigg; and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
A graduate of Allegany High School, Annie worked at the Celanese Fibers Corporation of America until she and Lester started Rice's Orchard in 1942, where she remained very active until 2015. Annie has been a member of the Allegany Mountain Fresh Producers Association Farmers markets since its beginning in 1991. She was likely the oldest vendor at the local Farmers Markets still picking produce and crafting "Annie's Gourdous Gourds," etc., until she was 96 years old. Annie has been an active member of the Allegany County Farm Bureau since 1950 holding several offices over the years. She traveled all over the country as well as Canada, Mexico, and the Netherlands, representing the Farm Bureau Women of the World.
Annie was a member of the Cumberland Bible Church where she also sang in the vocal ensemble. In life, she demonstrated a true servant's heart with her prayer often seeking to be ever mindful of the needs of others. Annie modeled Proverbs 31:27, "She watches over the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Annie is survived by her sons, William Rice and wife, Bonnie, Pocomoke, and, Paul Rice, with who she resided, Cumberland,;and her daughter, Joyce Emerick and husband, Glenn, Flintstone. She also leaves behind her sisters-in-law, Virginia Luznar, Hollywood, Betty Wolfry, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Rose McElfish, Cumberland. Annie is also survived by her grandchildren, Lynnette Gordon and husband, Kris, Bill Rice, all of North Carolina, and Brea Emerick, Cumberland; and her great-grandchildren, Krystina Gordon, Anastasia Gordon, Kaleb Gordon, Graesyn Harris, and Quinlyn Harris; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Friday, May 19, 2017, from 5 to 8 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Don Harrelson and Pastor Dwight Morgan officiating. The family will also receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Paul Rice, Bill Rice, Glenn Emerick, Bud McElfish, Mary Wolfry, and Billy Rice. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Mallow, Jack Miltenberger, Gayle Ware, Bill Miller, Chris Milburn, and Jerry Strawderman.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Val Delong, for helping to take care of "Mum," the Cumberland Bible Church ladies and the Farm Bureau ladies for all the prayers, cards, support, and meals over the years.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made in Annie's name to the Cumberland Bible Church, 300 East Third St., Cumberland, MD 21502.
