Barbara "Barbie"'s Story
Barbara L. "Barbie" Burkett, age 63, passed away May 23, 2017, at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Barbara was born May 21, 1954, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Barbara (Twigg) Burkett; her aunt and uncle, Wayne and Mary Lou Bucy; best friend, Phil Sheetz; and her beloved kitty "mommy's little baby boy," Rascal.
Barbara graduated from Allegany High School in 1972 and attended Allegany College in the mental health curriculum. She worked at Clinebell's Bakery as a cake decorator for over 10 years. She then worked at the Finan Center in the Massy Unit, before moving to Smithsburg; there she worked at Catoctin Summit as an addictions counselor. Because of health problems, she retired from Catoctin Summit after 10 years and moved back home to reside with her mother in LaVale.
Barbara was a life member of LaVale United Methodish Church, where she sang in the choir and participated in other activities.
Survivors include, John Burkett and wife, Donna, Cresaptown; sister, Mary Sukow and husband, Ken, Rawlings; and brother, Larry Burkett and wife Lisa, Cumberland; her nieces, Danyel Riley and husband, Donnie, their children, Kathryn, DJ, and Bella of Bel Air, and Ashley Burkett and Randy Means, LaVale. She also had four step-nieces and one step-nephew; and special cousins, Suzanne Kreger and husband, Perry, Springs, Pa., and David Bucy, South Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, make donations to LaVale United Methodist Church in honor of Barbara Burkett.
A memorial service will be held Aug. 11, 2017, at 6 p.m. at LaVale Methodist Church. After the service, a reception will be held in the church fellowship hall.
