Betty's Story

Betty Jean Hatter, 84, of Cumberland, formally of Short Gap, W.Va., died Monday, Nov. 27, 2017.
She was born on Jan. 2, 1933, in Cumberland, and grew up in Wiley Ford, W.Va. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Nellie Mudge (Files) Brinkman; her husband, Charles E. Hatter; brother, William Brinkman; and brother-in-law, William Self.
Betty graduated from Ridgeley High School, class of 1951, and went to work in Washington, D.C. She worked at the Times-Herald newspaper at the same time as Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, and she also worked for the F.B.I. She married Charlie, who was in the U.S. Army Old Guard in Washington, D.C. They moved to Connecticut, and later to West Virginia, where Betty was a homemaker and mother of four.
The last few years, she was living at the Kensington Assisted Living in Cumberland. Betty was a faithful member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and volunteered for various other activities. She was also a life member of the Cumberland Outdoor Club Ladies Auxiliary, a former member of the Women's Civic Club, and the Cumberland Moose Club.
Betty is survived by her sister, Joan Self, Short Gap, W.Va.; sister-in-law, Mary Jo Brinkman, Jacksonville, Fla.; daughters, Jakki Rogers and husband Boyce, Cumberland, and Jenny Hatter, Cincinnati, Ohio; sons, Mick Hatter, Ridgeley, W.Va., and Chris Hatter and wife Cyndee, Jeanette, Pa.; grandchildren, Brandon Adams and wife Amber, Michael Hatter, and Isabella Hatter; and great-granddaughter, Delilah Adams.
Friends will be received at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 16 Washington Street, Cumberland, on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017, from 1 to 3 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at the church following visitation at 3 p.m. with the Reverend Martha Macgill officiating.
Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
