Betty's Story

CHANDLER, Ariz. Betty S. Jarrell, formerly of Beckley W.Va., passed away on Monday, Aug. 7, 2017 in an assisted living home in Chandler. She had moved to Arizona in 2004 and lived with her son, Charles M. (Chuck) Jarrell, until recently. She was 92 years old and died of the complications of Alzheimer's disease.
Betty was the daughter of Guy L. Sanders and Bertha Schlosnagle Sanders of Fairmont W.Va. Guy and Bertha grew up in the Oakland area, married in 1911, and moved to Fairmont. Betty was their only child. She was a graduate of public schools in Fairmont and Fairmont State College (now Fairmont State University). Betty taught distributive education/retailing at Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley for more than 30 years. While at WWHS, she was an advisor to the DECA club and the National Honor Society. In retirement, she was an active member in the Beckley Women's Club, Habitat for Humanity, and the Methodist Temple. Betty was married for 43 years to Millard G. Jarrell, also a teacher at WWHS, who predeceased her in 1991.
Betty is survived by her son, Chuck Jarrell of Phoenix; three grandchildren, Melissa L. Jarrell (Josh Ozymy) of Corpus Christi, Texas, Christopher S. Jarrell (Rhaina) of Lake Havasu City, and Benjamin A. Jarrell of Vail, Colo.; and four greatgrandchildren, Sarah Jarrell, Molly Jarrell, Miles Jarrell, and Gus Ozymy.

Celebration of the life of Betty Jarrell will be held at Horizon Presbyterian Church in Phoenix on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017. Her remains will be interred with her late husband at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill, W.Va.
