Betty's Story

Betty Jane Means, 91, of Cumberland, passed away Thursday, Jan.18, 2018, at her home.
Born April 18, 1926, in Elkins, W,Va., Mrs. Means was the daughter of the late Young H. Carithers and Nettie (Isner) Winterstine. She was also preceded in death by her husbands; a brother, Gene Carithers; two sisters, Georgia Valentine and Clara Hite; and a special brother-in-law, Ken Valentine.
Betty retired from McCroy's Department Store with over 39 years of service and later worked part-time at Bon-Ton. She was a lifetime member of the Cumberland Outdoor Club and a former member of the Cumberland Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #243. Betty's favorite pastime was playing the scratch offs at several local stores and was always meticulously dressed.
Betty is survived by her only son, Jerry Brockey and wife, Linda, Bowling Green; her granddaughters, Cheri Loewendick and husband, Jim, Tracy Stewart and husband, Raymond, all of LaVale, and Lisa Moreland and husband, Corey, Short Gap, W.Va.; her great-grandchildren, Conner, Cassidy, Riley, Jayla, Jansen, and Jessa; and her step-great-grandchildren, Schon, Devon, and Cadon; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A service will follow at 1 p.m., with the Reverend Bernadette Ross officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
