Catherine "Cathy" Sharon Durbin went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, Feb. 23, 2018. She was a devoted Christian, wife, mother and grandmother.
She was born at Little Orleans, Maryland, Oct. 23, 1932. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Edith Sharon. She was preceded in death by her siblings, brothers; Robert, Steve, and Harvey Sharon; and sister, Faye Buzzard. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Douglas B. Durbin and their six children, Douglas R. Durbin and wife Cathy, Debbie Paugh and husband Donald, Pastor D. Lynn Durbin and wife Wendy, Darren C. Durbin, Dale W. Durbin and wife Rhonda, and Diann D. Larry and husband Pastor Randall.
She had 21 grandchildren, Matthew, Timothy, Nathan, Joseph, and Adam Durbin, Joshua and Michael Paugh, Bethany Whetstone, Stephanie Bowser, Mindy Cole and Jeffrey Durbin, Jessica Tewey, Jason, Jared, Tyler, and Trent Durbin, Daniel Larry, Rachel Winkle, Sarah Miller, Michal Kern and Jonathan Larry. She also had 35 great-grandchildren.
Cathy and her husband were members of Memorial Heights Baptist Church in Cumberland. She was a devoted Christian who loved her husband, children, grandchildren, and g.g. babies (great grandchildren). She never had a job outside her home, but she was a tireless homemaker and put forth great effort for her family who will all have fond memories and who will miss her greatly.
She raised her family to be dedicated to God. She was very proud of having ministers, missionaries, and faithful church goers amongst her children. She loved to go to church where she worked in children's programs. She worked with 5 day clubs, Good News Clubs, Sunday school classes, and children's church. She would spend her hard earned allowance to buy pizza and other goodies for needy children that went to her lessons. She loved passing out gospel tracts and witnessing about her salvation. She was saved watching Evangelist Billy Graham on TV. She said she was afraid of going to hell and asked Jesus to save her. This led to the salvation of her husband and entire family. The Evangelist Graham preceded her to heaven by two days.
God gave Cathy a desire to reach out to missionaries, and at one point she was writing letters to over 30 throughout the world. She had a passionate yearning to introduce children to Jesus.
The family wishes to thank all nurses and hospice workers who made her last days comfortable and her family comforted.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Monday, Feb. 26, 2018, from 5 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018, at 2 p.m. with Cathy's son, the Reverend Lynn Durbin, officiating.
