CUMBERLAND - Donald Leroy Simmons, 85, of Cumberland, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at Allegany Health, Nursing, and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Feb. 15, 1933, in Kessel, W.Va., Mr. Simmons was the son of the late Sanford R. Simmons and Elsie (Pratt) Simmons. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Woodrow, Arno, and Wilson "Willie" Simmons; and his sisters, Ruby Pratt, Beatrice Lewis, Burnell Turner, and Doris Wilt.
A graduate of Moorefield High School, class of 1951, Donald was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean War and retired from B&O Railroad. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. Donald was also a member of the Fort Cumberland Post 13 American Legion; the Moorefield American Legion Post 64, Moorefield, W.Va.; the Cumberland Outdoor Club; and the Good Fellowship Club.
Donald is survived by his sons, Q.R. Leatherman, Clements, and Bryan Leatherman and wife, Sheri, Moorefield; and his daughter, Debbie Snyder and husband, Earl, Petersburg, W.Va. He also leaves behind his brother, Lloyd Simmons and wife, Pat, Summerville, S.C.; two sisters: Ramona Boswell, Moorefield, and Kay Hite, Cumberland; two grandchildren, Ashley and Amber Snyder; one great grandson, Landon; Godson, Jeremy Linaburg; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Saturday, March 17, 2018, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
A memorial service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at 1 p.m.
Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park at a later date.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Allegany Health, Nursing, and Rehabilitation Center for all the care and compassion given to Donald.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Fort Cumberland Post 13 American Legion, Post Office Box 1740, Cumberland, MD 21501-1740.
