Dorothy Shumaker Trostle of Lancaster, Pa., passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017, in Lancaster. She was born in Cumberland, on Sept. 21, 1921. Dorothy was a longtime resident of Cumberland until moving to The Willow Valley Retirement Community in Lancaster, a number of years ago to be near relatives.
She was the daughter of the late Justus W. Shumaker and Gladys D.Tichnell Shumaker. Dorothy was the sister of the late Charles Frederick Shumaker and the late Wanetta Ruth Shumaker Grim. She married Willard "Bill" Mervin Trostle in 1959. He preceded her in death in 1990. In addition, Dorothy was preceded in death by her niece, Ronna Lee Grim Stierstorfer.
She is survived by her niece, Dorothy Moreland and her husband, Charles, of Chambersburg, Pa.; her nephew, David L. Grim and his wife, Shari, of Street; her niece, Ann Castles and her husband, Ross, of LaVale; and her nephew, Ian Trostle and his wife, Kathy, of Glen Burnie. Additionally, she is survived by a number of grandnieces and nephews.
Dorothy was a graduate of Fort Hill High School, class of 1939. She was a life-long member of St. John's Lutheran Church. She began working for the telephone company in 1942, originally the Chesapeake and Potomac Co., and finally retiring in 1980 from Verizon.
Visitation will be held at Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017, from noon to 1 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. with Pastor Stephen Yelovich officiating.
Interment will be in Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.
