Edith's Story

Edith R. Smith, 85, of Ridgeley, W.Va. went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 12, 2018, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 3, 1932, in Houston, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Anna (Jones) Waite Lucher and Austin Waite. She was also preceded in death by her step-father, August Lucher, Sr.; brothers, Emery Waite and A.W. Waite; and sister, Wendellyn Avitts.
Edith, Edie, Mom, Grandma, Grams, and Granny loved more than anything, to spend time with her family. She was an animal lover and enjoyed the many pets she had throughout her life. She was a kind and caring person and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Edith was a faithful member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. She retired from the Western Maryland Consortium in 1996 where she worked for 17 years.
Edith is survived by her husband of 67 years, William H. Smith, Sr.; sons, William H. Smith, Jr. and wife Diana, Ridgeley, Kenneth A. Smith and wife Cindy, Confluence, Pa.; daughters, Sheryl A. Files and husband James, Short Gap, Barbara J. Hoover and life partner Cyndi Knight, Cumberland, and Judith L. Christopher and husband Scott, Oldtown; brother, A. Raymond Lucher, Jr. and wife Janice, Teague, Texas; 12 grandchildren, Dan Smith, Jennifer Hoffman and husband Aaron, David Smith, Gary Files, Greg Files and wife Alicia, Adam Smith, Laura Smith, Julie Alexander and husband Sheldon, Janelle Hoover and fiancée Adam Beville, Sheena Martin and husand Shane, Dane Christopher and wife Ashley, and Brendan Christopher; great-grandchildren, Madison Smith, Ethan Smith, Colton Smith, Coby Smith, Tinsley Files, Fiona Alexander, Farrah Alexander, Wyatt Alexander, Laina Martin, and Alonna Christopher.
A very special thanks to Mom's sitters, Judy Smith, Chris Hanlin, and Linda Garlitz, who gave Mom excellent care, and who showed their love for her in many ways. Also to Dr. Paul Livengood who was Mom's doctor. Our family can't thank him enough for the many years of medical care and emotional support he gave to Mom and to our family.
In accordance with Edith's wishes, her body will be cremated. All services will be private. Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. is entrusted with arrangements.
