Edward R. Emerson

September 13, 1926 - November 30, 2018

Edward R. Emerson CUMBERLAND - Edward R. Emerson, 92, of Cumberland, passed away Nov. 30, 2018, into his waiting Heavenly Father's arms, while residing at The Lions Center for Rehabilitation and Extended Care.
Born Sept. 13, 1926, in Independence, W.Va., he was the youngest son of Peter and Katherine (Hnatyk) Yacenech.
A United States Army veteran who served in the Philippines during WWII, he was a member of truly the world's greatest generation.
He retired from Allegany Ballistic Laboratory, now ATK, after a 45 year career, beginning as a draftsman and ending as Senior Facilities Engineer.
He was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.
Dad loved sharing his musical talents and love of the Lord with those in institutional settings by making his rounds on Sunday afternoons to nursing homes, including Lions, and the Allegany County jail, among others. Weekday evenings and Saturdays, he could be found playing tennis, making his opponents run all over the court chasing his patented dink shots. After his knees began to fail, he walked the par course track at Allegany College of Maryland. His garden included tomatoes only, sitting in a chair as he tended the plants and eating much of the yield before it reached the table. A caring man, he visited family members who were in nursing homes on a daily basis, assisting them at meal times, reading and reminiscing.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Sandra K. (Deremer) Emerson; his sisters, Mary, Stella, and Ann; and brothers, Mike, Alec, Steve, and Tony.
He is survived by his daughter, Terri Yacenech-Emerson, Cumberland; son, Brent Emerson and wife, Renae; step-grandson, George Click and wife, Courtney; great-grandchildren, Lilly, Dillon, and Otto; step-grandson Philip Click, all of Arnold; granddaughter Merritt Emerson, Arlington, Va.; and furry companion, Trix.
At dad's request, he will be cremated.
Friends will be received at Cornerstone Baptist Church, 930 Frederick St., Cumberland, on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018, from noon until 1 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. with Pastor David Hattenfield, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ark of Hope Animal Rescue, 13400 Lower Town Creek Road, S.E., Oldtown, MD 21555.
The family would like to their gratitude to all of the excellent staff at The Lions Center, especially Lindsey, Alexis, and Renae for their consistently loving care of our father. He felt at home.
