CUMBERLAND Eleanor E. Rice, 91, passed away peacefully at her home on Bedford Road, Cumberland, on Monday, Dec. 25, 2017.
Born on Feb. 18, 1926, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Edgar S. Rice and Odell H. Rice. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
A lifelong resident of Cumberland, she grew up on Pennsylvania Avenue in Cumberland, and graduated from Fort Hill High School, where she became proficient in shorthand and typing. She then attended Catherman's Business School, Cumberland, and later moved with her parents to their home on Bedford Road where she remained until her passing.
Upon graduating from Catherman's, she began her career as a legal secretary for attorney Earl Manges, Cumberland. Several years later, she became secretary for attorney, Thomas N. Berry of Cumberland, for nearly 40 years, until his passing in 1998. Thereafter, she served as secretary for attorney, Edward Crossland, Cumberland, until her retirement in 2007.
Along with her parents, she was a lifelong member of the Centre Street United Methodist Church, Cumberland, and she enjoyed singing in the choir for many years. Eleanor enjoyed reading and was a supporter of the Allegany County Public Library, enjoyed corresponding with friends, as well as spending time at her home with her pets and friends. Eleanor also played the violin in her younger years, and enjoyed listening to classical and opera music.
Eleanor received wonderful care in her home from caregivers in her later years, and a very special thank you to her caretakers at the time of her passing, Connie Metty, Carole Harper, Fred Thomas, Cindy O'Donnell, Lori Kimble and Renee Bean.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Friday, Dec. 29, 2017, from 1 to 2 p.m.
The funeral service will follow in the funeral home at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Thomas Young Jr., officiating.
Her body will be interred alongside her parents at Hillcrest Burial Park, Mason Road, Cumberland.
In lieu of flowers, it is her request that any memorials be made by contribution in her name to the Allegany County Library System, 31 Washington St., Cumberland, or the Allegany County Animal Shelter, PO Box 566, Cumberland.
