Ernest Francis Whitman


Ernest Francis Whitman, 93, of Cumberland, died Monday, April 15, 2019 at Allegany Health Nursing & Rehab.
Born Nov. 18, 1925 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late William Ernest Whitman and Bessie May (Baxter) Whitman.
He was also preceded in death by his two sisters, Verna Sirna and Elizabeth Bateman.
He Was a graduate of Fort Hill High School.
Mr. Whitman was a veteran of Word War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Whitman retired from PPG where he was an order cutter.
He was raised in St. John's Lutheran Church. This year he was honored for his 70 years of membership in Queen City Lodge #131, A.F. & A.M.
Mr. Whitman had a wood shop, where he enjoyed making furniture. An avid golfer, he was proud to have had two holes in one.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Frances Whitman; two sons, David W. Whitman and wife Joanna and John R. Whitman and wife Joan; one daughter, Fabinne Kay Vann and husband David; grandchildren, Candice Marple and husband Joseph, Anna Faciane and husband Corey, Wesley Van, Abby Vann and boyfriend Preston Cox, Alexandria Whitman, and John Samuel Whitman; and three great-grandchildren, Luke, Lucy, and Avery.
Over the years, he had several dear friends, James and Margaret Manges, Hugh and Mary Malamphy, and The Sirna Family.
The committal service will be held on Monday, April 29th. at 11 a.m. in the chapel at Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post #13 Veterans Honor Guard.
