Galen's Story

Text size

Galen Ray Batzel, 74, of Carpendale peacefully passed away Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017, at his home surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Born Dec. 1, 1943, in Hopewell, Pa., Mr. Batzel was the son of the late Floyd Batzel and Marie (Smith) Batzel. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Megan Batzel; four brothers, Robert, Donald, Dale, and Quinton Batzel; and a sister, Joyce Batzel.
A U.S. Army veteran from 1965 to 1967, stationed in Paris, France, Galen was a 1961 graduate of Northern Bedford County High School and a 1962 graduate of Catherman's Business School. Upon graduation, he began a 38-year career with Kelly-Springfield Tire and Rubber Company. Galen was a member of the Cumberland Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Spending time outdoors always brought Galen a sense of satisfaction and happiness. He and his "hiking and fishing buddy," Matthew, were often meandering through the woods enjoying all the beauty of creation. He loved expressing to others his faith in the Bible's wonderful promises for the future. Behind his kind and gentle disposition was a stalwart determination to overcome his rare disease. His resolve fortified him with a positive attitude in the face of overwhelming odds. Even during his last few days, he never expressed resentment or a complaining spirit. His warmth and compassion will be greatly missed.
Galen is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sharon (Watson) Batzel; his daughter, Courtney Beanard; and a grandson, Matthew Beanard. He also leaves behind his brother, Fred Batzel and wife, Nancy, Everett, Pa.; his sisters, Dolores Clapper and husband, Joe, and Carol Porter and husband, Mark, all of Hopewell, Pa.
Friends will be received at Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com), on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2017, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Memorial services will follow at 1 p.m. with Speaker Gordon Orr officiating.
