Geneva's Story

CUMBERLAND - Geneva Carrie (Lewis) Nave, 96, of Cumberland, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 9, 1921, in Cumberland, Mrs. Nave was the daughter of the late Jacob McClellan Lewis and Roberta "Bertha" (Michaels) Lewis. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles "Art" Nave, a local firefighter for the City of Cumberland; and her brothers, Elroy and Carlson Lewis.
A graduate of Allegany High School, class of 1939, Geneva took swimming and high dive lessons at Fort Hill Swimming Pool and attended night classes in bookkeeping and shorthand at Catherman's Business School. Continuing with her education, Geneva graduated from the Peabody Institute of Music and taught piano lessons after graduation. She also graduated from Allegany College of Maryland, 1998, Magna Cum Laude.
Geneva was employed part time at Kline's Clothing Store and McCrory's 5&10; store. She also worked for two years at A&P Groceries, the Celanese Fibers Corporation of America for 14 years, the Baptist Church for four years and retired in 1986, after 14 years with the City of Cumberland. Geneva volunteered at Sacred Heart Hospital for 11 years; served as secretary to the Board of Directors at CCSCU for 10 years; was Past President of the Ladies Shrine Club; and Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Civic Club; the Ladies of the Nile; the Sheiks and Sheilas; the Red Hats; and an auxiliary member of the American Legion Morris Frock Post 42, Hagerstown, where she enjoyed time with her son and family who was Commander in 1999. Geneva loved traveling and spending time with family, relatives, and friends. She was able to fly in an open cockpit with her brother, Elroy who served as a pilot in World War II.
Geneva is survived by her son, Dennis A. Nave and wife, Sandra; her grandson, Brian A. Nave and wife, Staci; and her great-grandsons: Braydon, Christian, and Zackery Nave, and Tyler Holbrook. She also leaves behind her sisters, Audrey, Patricia; and her brother, Gary.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017, from 2 to 3 p.m. with a service following at 3 p.m. with Pastor David Wright officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Legion Morris Frock Post 42, Post Office Box 2125, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
