Georgine's Story

Sister Georgine Grabenstein, O.S.U., 99, of Louisville, Ky., died at Nazareth Home-Clifton, Louisville, on Friday, June 2, 2017.
Sister Georgine was a native of Cumberland. She was the daughter of the late George Henry Grabenstein and Catherine (Detterman) Grabenstein.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Alphonsus J. Grabenstein and Raphael Grabenstein; as well as five sisters, Mrs. John J. Milkouski, Mrs. Ellis A. Rose, Mrs. Willard Wolford, Mrs. Calvin Hoover, and Miss Viola E. Grabenstein, all of Cumberland. She was the last remaining member of her immediate family. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews in the Cumberland area.
Sister entered the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville 79 years ago (in 1938). Sister taught at schools in Omaha, Neb., Pittsburgh, Pa., and Cumberland. She served as principal of St. Francis de Sales School in Morgantown, W.Va., in the late 1960's, and of St. Joseph the Worker School in Weirton, W.Va., from 1970 to 1975. Sister Georgine served in Kentucky as principal at St. Francis of Assisi School. She taught at St. Elizabeth, St. George, Holy Spirit, St. Rita, Our Lady of Lourdes, and St. John Vianney schools. Sister Grabenstein also served as a teacher at Sacred Heart and at Angela Merici High School.
Sister Grabenstein served as pastoral associate at St. Leonard Church from 1984 to 1990 and at St. Martin of Tours Church from 1996 to 2005. She was a teacher's aide at St. Joseph School from 2005 until 2011, she volunteered at the St. Matthews Area Ministries and Respect Life Office.
Sister earned a bachelor of science in education degree from Ursuline College of Louisville and a master of arts in elementary administration degree from Creighton University, Omaha.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated June 6, 2017, at the Ursuline Motherhouse chapel. Burial followed in St. Michael Cemetery.
A Mass will be said for Sister Georgine on Oct. 8, 2017, at St. Mary's Church of the Lady of the Mountains Parish.
