GERALD's Story

Gerald L. "Jerry" Cathell Jr., 62, of Knobley Road, Burlington, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2017, at the Hampshire Health Care Center, Romney.
Born on Jan. 25, 1955, at Lorain, Ohio, he was the son of the late Gerald L. "Pete" Cathell and Lucille Marie "Red" (Millslagle) Cathell. He also was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Delores Metcalf.
Jerry was a 1973 graduate of Keyser High School and was employed for 30 years as a signalman with CSX Transportation. A member of the Sunnyside Church of the Brethren, New Creek, he attended the Fountain United Brethren in Christ Church and for over 30 years, was an active volunteer with Camp Galilee Church Camp of the Church of the Brethren in Terra Alta. Jerry was a very mission minded person and worked with and supported many local charities and community service projects.
Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Rhonda Lynn (Metcalf) Cathell; two daughters, Chrissi Baker and husband, Roy of Morgantown, and Valerie Ravenscroft and husband, Matt of Burlington; five grandchildren, Morgan and Madison Baker and Cadence, Adelynn and Blake Ravenscroft; a sister, Linda S. Shirley and husband, Dennis of Derwood, and his father-in-law, Charles "Junior" Metcalf of Burlington.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Friday, Dec. 29, 2017, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Fountain United Brethren in Christ Church on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017, at 11 a.m. with Pastors Craig Howard and Roy Baker officiating. Friends may also call at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to Camp Galilee, c/o Westmarva District of the Church of the Brethren, 384 Dennett Road Oakland, MD 21550.
