Gertrud's Story

Gertrud Steele, 80, of Mount Savage, passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2017, at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Born on May 10, 1937, in Birkhof, Germany, she was the daughter of Frederick and Marie (Baumann) Baumann. She is preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Willi Baumann and Frieder Baumann.
Gertrud was a homemaker, an avid gardner and had a beautiful flower garden. She claimed that "she had the largest Rhododendrum in Allegany County." Gertrud had a gift to gab talking to everybody, especially about gardening.
Surviving are her husband of 57 years, George T. Steele; children, Debby and husband, Eugene Steele-Snyder, Berwyn Heights, Pamela and husband, Delmos George Jr., Salisbury, Pa., Thomas and wife, Vanessa Steele, Frostburg; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Erika and husband, Albert Hertfelder, Germany; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private family visitation and funeral service was held.
Interment was in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Schwab Family Cancer Center, 12500 Willowbrook Road, Cumberland, MD 21502.
