Helen Marie Dickerhoof, 93, of Cumberland, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, at Egle Nursing and Rehab Center where she had been a resident for eight months.
Born Aug. 23, 1924, in Lansing, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Arthur J. and Anna (Earner) Burnett. Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Lewis Dale "Dick" Dickerhoof, in 2003. Four brothers and three sisters also preceded her in death. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
After graduating high school in Lansing she met her husband, who was stationed there while serving in the United States Army Air Corps. During World War II, Helen served as a Navy WAVE. After the war, she moved with Dick to his hometown, Cumberland. She attended Catherman's Business School, and in 1951 went to work at the Allegany County Board of Education as a receptionist. She retired in 1986 having served as the administrative assistant to three superintendents. After her retirement, she worked for the Power of Positive Students Foundation (POPS), first in Cumberland, then for several years in Myrtle Beach.
Surviving Helen are her daughter, Judy Dickerhoof Conrad, Cumberland; son, Dale Dickerhoof, Cumberland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dale and Judy are forever grateful to everyone at Egle Nursing and Rehab Center for their care, kindness, and compassion.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A funeral service will immediately follow at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap. Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by Fort Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
