Jerry Edward Nines, 72, of Newport News, formerly of Cumberland, died on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017, at his home surrounded by his family
Born in Cumberland, on Jan. 11, 1945, he was the son of the late Betty (Moore) and Theodore "Ted" Nines. In addition his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Teddy Nines, Paul Nines, and Henry Nines.
Jerry was a graduate of Fort Hill High School, Class of 1964. Following high school, Jerry served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After being discharged, he attended Technical College in Baltimore where he learned electronics. He was employed by Bendix Corporation and Continental Corporation for 42 years until his retirement. While he was employed, Jerry and his fellow members of his team received many engineering patents.
Jerry was a member of the Moose Lodge in Newport News. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed boating and fishing on Lake Gaston, N.C.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 50 years, Louise (Murphy) Nines; children, Lynette Hargrave and husband, Larry, of Newport News, and Jerry Edward Nines II, Newport News; grandchildren, Camden Charland, Nicholas Charland, Corey Charland, and Crislyn Charland; sister-in-law Reby; aunt, Marlene Kline and her husband, Robert. Jerry is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m.
Funeral services will take place at the funeral home on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017, at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Celebration of life services will be conducted at Deep Creek Marina, Newport News, on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2017, at 3 p.m.
