Joann's Story

Joann Elladeen Laber, 86, of Cumberland, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, at Devlin Manor Nursing Home.
Born Oct. 12, 1931, in Cumberland, was the daughter of the late William Russell Gibson and Jessie Virginia (Beck) Gibson. She was also the daughter of the late James Bernard Wigger and Bessie Marie (Beck) Wigger, her adoptive parents. She was the wife of the late Louis Paul Laber, who passed away in 1982. In addition, she was preceded in death by her sons, Mark Allen Laber in 2006, and Gary Paul Laber in 2014; and brothers, David Glendon Kennedy, St. Petersburg, Fla., Don Gene Gibson, and Thomas Marion Kennedy.
She was a graduate of Fort Hill High School, Class of 1950, and St. Mary's Grade School.
She attended St. Mary's Catholic Church and was the president of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 1411, District 3, State of Maryland. She volunteered at Veterans Clinic of Cumberland and was a member of Unit 13 American Legion.
She is survived by two daughters, Robin Kay Gallagher and husband, Thomas, Cumberland, and Beth Marie Laber, Boulder, Colo.; eight grandchildren, Gary Paul Laber Jr., James Andrew Laber, Cumberland, Anthony Kyle Carcella, Boulder, Mathew Mark Laber, Lakewood, Colo., Cory Lee Painter, Ft. Ashby, W.Va., Justin Ross Painter, McHenry, Sara Beth Rice, Cumberland, Todd Allen Laber, Cumberland; eight great-grandchildren, Louise Carcella, Boulder, Althea Laber, Lakewood, Emma Painter, Lilee Painter, Rylee Painter, Ft. Ashby, Westyn Parks, Kentyn Rice, and Macklyn Rice, Cumberland; brothers, John D. Kennedy, Alcola, Tenn., Arthur Ralph Kennedy, Aikens, S.C.; and brother-in-law, Gene Laber and wife, Sara, Punta Gorda, Fla.
In accordance with Joann's wishes, her body will be cremated. Services will be held at a later date.
