John's Story

Text size

John F. Avery, 82, of Cumberland, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loved ones on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017.
John was born and raised in Bethesda and was preceded in death by William and Margaret Little, his mother and stepfather; Judith Devine, his ex-wife and most dearest friend; Susan Avery, his eldest daughter; and Charles Avery, his brother.
Born and raised in Bethesda, John served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years and received the rank of senior master sergeant. Although highly regarded for his service, he remained humble and rarely spoke of his achievements. John's love of country and sense of civic pride came second only to the love and pride felt towards his family. He was creative and enjoyed restoring furniture in his spare time which led him to establish Avery's Upholstery Shop and eventually teach this skill to others as a continuing education instructor.
John fought his illnesses bravely and with dignity and was always bouncing back to spend all the time he could with his children and grandchildren, who needed him.
John leaves behind his daughter, Robin McGee-Cutter, Cumberland; son, John Avery and wife, Martha, Belle Vernon, Pa.; dearly beloved grandchildren, Christa McGee, Avery Cutter, Cole Avery, and Robert Avery; sister, Joanne Drury, Sebastian, Fla.; brothers, Mike Little and wife, Carol, Edgewater, Fla., and Tom Little and wife, Sherri, Mt. Airy; and several nephews and nieces.
The family would like to thank the physicians and staff who assisted in John's care, as well as the hospice service for their loving care.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday, Sept.13, 2017, from 3 to 4 p.m.
A memorial service will immediately follow at the funeral home at 4 p.m. with Pastor Michael Mudge officiating. Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
