John "Jack"'s Story

John Robert "Jack" Reckley, 82, of Cumberland, went to sing in the heavenly chorus on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Jack was born in Cumberland on Aug. 18, 1935, to Alvey J. and Myrtle A. (Brinkman) Reckley and was preceded in death by one brother, five sisters, and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Jack graduated from Allegany High School, class of 1953, and attended Frostburg State University. He was employed at the B&O railroad in Keyser, W.Va., Allegany Ballistics Laboratory, and Kelly-Springfield Tire and Rubber Company. After the Kelly closing, Jack started a home improvement business and worked at that until he was in his 70s. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Cumberland for 60 years where he served as the chairman of the board of deacons, teacher of the men's Sunday school class, money counter, and choir director. Jack had an appreciation for music of all kinds from classical to country and sang in musical groups from high school until his retirement years. He sang solos at many weddings and funerals. Jack was also an active member of the National Railroad Historical Society, Western Maryland Chapter, and a life-member of the NRA.
Jack is survived by his wife of 63 years, Roberta "Bobbie" (Markwood) Reckley; three sons, Dr. John Steven Reckley, Cumberland, Dale Reckley, Florence, Mont., David Reckley (Jeanie), Fitzgerald, Ga.; and one daughter, Janet Cregger (Evan), Frederick. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Andrew, Aaron, Matthew, and Shilah Reckley, Curtis, Grant, Jeffrey, and Adam Cregger, Jennifer Sumner and Laura DeBruin; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the First Baptist Church, 212 Bedford Street, Cumberland, on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, from 4 to 6 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at the First Baptist Church on Friday, Oct. 20, 2017, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Randall Larry officiating. The family will also receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Jack's name to the First Baptist Church, 212 Bedford Street, Cumberland, MD 21502.
