NEWPORT NEWS, Va. John Joseph McLean, 94, passed away peacefully at his home in the presence of his family on Friday, May 12, 2017.
John was born in Thomas, W.Va., April 29, 1923. He was a resident of Denbigh, Va. for 52 years.
John is survived by his wife, Marie Louise (Beaulieu) McLean of 74 years; three daughters, Pamela Anderson (Gerald) of Matthews, Va., Jennifer Fisher (Boyd) of Naples, Fla. And Debbie Jo Kirkland (Art Plank) of Jacksonville, Fla.; four sons, all from Denbigh, Patrick; Michael (Brenda), Timothy (Kathy) and Joel David (Michele). They have 24 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren. He was our protector and will be loved and missed until we see him again.
John joined the Navy on July 15, 1941, and Served in World War II. He served on the USS Randolph, CW5, USS Ticonderoga and CV-7. He was the bomb/torpedo observer for his Executive Officers. He was in the islands of Okinawa, main island of Japan and the small islands of the Pacific. After retiring to the States, he re-enlisted in the Naval Reserve Training Program, being stationed in Baltimore, Charleston, W.Va. and finally back to Cumberland. He re-enlisted back into the regular Navy and retired from the Navy with 20 years of service.
During his final days at home, he received constant, loving care and compassion from his wife, children, grandchildren and family.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held at St. Jerome Catholic Church, 116 Denbigh Blvd., Newport News, on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. He was a founding member of the St. Jerome parish, a member of the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree, Council 5486 and a charter member of the VFW Denbigh, Newport News, Va.
