John's Story

CUMBERLAND - John J. O'Donnell, 78, of Cumberland, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 15, 1939, in Cumberland, Mr. O'Donnell was the son of the late John Edward O'Donnell and Genevieve Philomena (Nolan) O'Donnell. He was also preceded in death by a son, John David O'Donnell; and a brother, James Patrick O'Donnell.
A graduate of LaSalle High School, class of 1957, John was a United Army Veteran during the Vietnam Era. For many years John ran his own company, Advisory Services, until he took over as the Executive Director of the Interfaith Consortium of Greater Cumberland. A charitable organization that helped thousands of needy families in Allegany & Mineral Counties with food, clothing and most especially low income housing. John was a member Saint Patrick Catholic Church, and served as past Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus 586. He was also a member of the Cumberland Outdoor Club, the Fort Cumberland Post 13 American Legion, the Elks Lodge 63, and a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 245.
John is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marie (Cooke) O'Donnell; his children, Leslie O'Donnell of Denver, Colo., Sean O'Donnell and wife, Heidi of Carpendale, W.Va., Michelle Spiker and husband, Master Sergeant James, of Fort Riley, Kan., and Timothy O'Donnell and wife, Melania of Harrisonburg, Va. He also leaves behind his sisters, Deirdre J. Spencer and husband, James, Medina, Ohio, Judith A. Anderson, and M. Janice O'Donnell, both of Edgewood; his grandchildren, Brooke, Breanna, Sebastian, Steven, Kamryn, Sheridan, Karleigh, and Nicholas; and his great-grandchildren, Aeries and Robert. He also leaves his best friend and our special family friend Mr. Charles Davy of Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m. The Rosary will be recited.
Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, Saint Patrick Church, Cumberland, on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, at 11 a.m.
Interment will be in Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.
Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
The family would also like to thank the special team at Devlin Manor Nursing Home who helped make John comfortable in his final times and the CVU/ICU teams at WMHS who took such good care of him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Hospice Unit at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
