John William Shawen, 84, of Romney, W.Va. passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at Hampshire Memorial Hospital.
Born on Dec. 12, 1933 in Romney, he was the son of the late William M. Shawen and Frances (Carder) Shawen.
He worked as a maintenance supervisor for Kelly Springfield Tire until retirement. He was a graduate of Romney High School Class of 1953 where he made the W.Va. All State First Team in 1952 and was inducted into the Romney High School Hall of Fame and made all conference as a senior. He played football at Potomac State College and military service football. He was inducted into the Hampshire County Hall of Fame in 2011. He served in the U S Army and was a member of the American Legion and Loyal Order of Moose.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gertha G. (Baker) Shawen, in 2015; and four brothers, Robert, Jerry, Baker, and Arthur Shawen.
Surviving are two sisters, Willmetta "Wink" Judy of Pleasant Dale, Gail Ratliff of Romney, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday March 18, 2018 at 2 p.m. in McKee Funeral Home Chapel, 115 E. Birch Lane Romney, W.Va. with Jason Judy officiating. Interment will follow in Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney where military honors will be accorded.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 12 p.m. until time of service.
