Joseph's Story

Joseph Kent McKay, 84, of Cumberland passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018, at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Born on August 7, 1933, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Cyril J. McKay Sr. and Hestel P. (Twigg) McKay. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Lambert, Orange, Calif., and son-in-law, Alan Hughes.
Joseph was a 1952 graduate of LaSalle High School and served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps from 1953 to 1957. He was employed by CSX Corporation for 43 years as an electrician and was a member of the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers). Joseph was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign War and American Legion. He was a devout member of the Catholic Church and attended mass at both St. Mary's and S.S. Peter and Paul churches, Our Lady of the Mountains Parish.
Surviving Joseph are his wife of 59 years, Catherine T. (Madden) McKay, Cumberland; daughter, Celeste Hughes and her partner, Mark Easingwood, Swindon, Wiltshire, England; grandsons, James Hughes and Richard Hughes, both of Swindon, Wiltshire, England; brother, Cyril J. McKay Jr., Cumberland; nieces, Catherine Nearhoof, Bel Air, and Jeannie Lambert, Orange, Calif.; nephews, Michael McKay, Pasadena, and Randy Lambert, Orange, Calif.; and sister-in-law, Anne Jewell, McKinney, Texas.
Family will receive friends at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Monday, Jan. 29, 2018, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Christian Wake service will be conducted at the funeral home at 8:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Shrine of SS Peter & Paul, 125 Fayette St., on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018, at 1 p.m.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. Military Honors will be accorded by Fort Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to St. Anthony's Place, 300 E. Oldtown Road, Ste 2, Cumberland, MD 21502.
