Kathryn D. Simpson, 95, of Keyser, W.Va., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017, at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, Cumberland, Md.
Born on Aug.19, 1922, in Keyser, she was the daughter of the late P.E. and Clara R. (Davy) DeMuth. She joins them along with her husband, Homer L. Simpson Sr., who died on Aug. 8, 2007, at his residence; her son, Charles Dean Simpson; her grandson, Charles D. Simpson Jr., and her brother, the Rev. Philip DeMuth.
Surviving are her son, H.L. "Rusty" Simpson Jr.; two daughters-in-law; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Being a lifetime member of the Keyser Presbyterian Church, she was happy to be active in the women of the church and worked for 10 years with her husband in the office at the former Ludwick Chevrolet dealership in Keyser. Mrs. Simpson was a retired charter member of Alpha Sigma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary society for women educators. Eighteen years after graduating from high school in 1940, she began her college education, graduating from Potomac State College with an A.A. Degree in Education. She then went on to Frostburg State College where she received her B.S. Degree and a Masters Degree in Education from West Virginia University. She taught elementary school in Ridgeley, W.Va., until her retirement in 1985.
She enjoyed doing oil painting pictures for her home and gifts for friends and her work with flowers on her patio was a delight. She traveled to the West Coast to meet her father's relatives whom she had never seen. As a 20-year cancer survivor and a 50-year diabetic, she was so very thankful for insulin. She was also very grateful for the loving interest of her caregivers, Sarah Harris and Gwen Redman. Her pet cat, Twinkle, gave her 17 years of comfort.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, Sept. 15, 2017, at 2 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, with Pastor Tom Forbes officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to services.
Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
Condolences and personal reflections to the family may be left after Mrs. Simpson's obituary at smithfuneralhomes.net.
