RIDGELEY, W.Va. L. Raymond "Poppy" Evans Jr., went to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at Cumberland Health Care Center.
Mr. Evans was born on Sept. 11, 1924, in Baltimore, to the late Lewis R. Evans and Josephine (Towles) Evans. Raised in West Baltimore, he was active in the West Baltimore Democratic Club and was a friend to William Donald Schaefer former Mayor of Baltimore and Governor of Maryland.
Mr. Evans proudly served in the United States Navy's Pacific Fleet during World War II. Upon the end of the War, he began working for C & P Telephone Company and continued through his retirement in 1988. Ray was often called out to work after disasters struck throughout the East Coast; often working around the clock to restore service to communities that lost telephone service.
Ray loved duckpin bowling, Baltimore Orioles baseball, and watching The Price Is Right. He was an avid card player with Pinochle being his favorite. A devoted family man, he loved watching his children and grandchildren play sports. Ray never met anyone he did not like and would do anything for anyone. He was an animal lover and always had a dog.
