Leonard's Story

Leonard W. "Bill" Mackereth, age 88, of Carlisle, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018 at his daughter's home in Duncannon.
He was born July 8, 1929 in Park Head, Md. to the late Leonard W. and Cora M. (Reed) Mackereth and was the widower of Katheryn A. (Fradiska) Mackereth who passed Aug. 9, 2017. They had been married 66 years.
Bill honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1951-1953 during the Korean War. He worked as a diesel mechanic for Eastern Express Trucking Company from 1953-1977 and retired as a supervisor for Shaffer Trucking Company in Mechanicsburg after more than 15 years of service. Bill was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan and enjoyed watching all sports, especially Penguins hockey with his grandson, playing golf with his buddies in the yearly Giant Food Tournament, and striking up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, whether he knew them or not. He always looked forward to working the Carlisle Events car shows for 17 years. Bill was a life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 1299, Carlisle, the White Circle Club of Carlisle and the VFW, where he served as past commander of Post 7527, Bedford. He was a member of Tree of Life Church, Carlisle.
He is survived by a son, Leonard W. Mackereth, III of Montebello, Calif.; a daughter, Jerry Lynn (husband Paul) Myers of Duncannon; siblings, Curtis (wife Mary Jo) Mackereth of Washington, D.C., Clyde (wife Shirley) Mackereth and Okey (wife Sandra) Mackereth, both of Oldtown, and Phyllis (husband Gene) Zimmerman of Cumberland; two grandsons, Jerry L. Corle, Jr and Jason L. Corle; and five great-grandchildren, all of Carlisle. In addition to his parents and wife, Bill was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard, Chester and Lee; and two sisters, baby Xerpha Mackereth and Hope Richard.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, at Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, with the Reverend David Herr officiating. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There will be a visitation at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the services.
