Louis's Story

Louis Virgil Kerns Sr., 98, of Cumberland, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2017, at his home.
Born May 25, 1919, in Elkins, W.Va., Mr. Kerns was the son of the late Luther Winfield Kerns and Zoey (Warner) Kerns. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Leona C. Kerns; his brothers, Ernest, Stelman, and Ivan Kerns; his sisters, Helen, Edith, Virginia, and Nelda; and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
A United States Army/Air Corps veteran during World War II, Louis retired from the Sheet Metal Workers Local 100. He truly enjoyed playing music and was a well-known musician in the area having played with several bands including Joe Maphis and "The Rail Splitters."
Louis is survived by his son, Louis V. Kerns Jr. and wife, Judy, Orlando, Fla.; and his daughters, Georgia Scott, Monaca, Pa., Linda Miller and John Gary, Portland, Ore., Lois Kerns and Louise Duguid, both of Cumberland. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Douglas Scott and wife, Julie, Betsy Scott, Cathy Jesse, Michael Scott and wife, Dee, Hugh Scott and wife, Nuie, Walter Scott and wife, A.K., Ronald Miller, Brandy Ligon and husband, Jason, Stephanie Ogilvie, Jennifer Kerns and husband, Kevin, Justin Kerns and wife, Michelle, Renee Hercules, Amy Magruder and husband, Kenny, Marc Pyles and wife, Stephanie, and Walter Dawson and wife, Denise; as well as numerous great and great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Sunday, July 9, 2017, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, July 10, 2017, at 10 a.m. with Pastor Randall Larry officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap. Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
