Margaret "Margie" "Lady" Fanning Alderson

May 29, 1948 - January 05, 2019

Margaret Margie Lady Fanning Alderson Margaret "Margie", "Lady" Fanning Alderson, 97, of Cumberland, passed away on Jan. 5, 2019.
She was the daughter of the late Edward and Sarah Fanning of Washington, Indiana. Her first job was working in the office of the Ration Board during World War II. That was not the happiest environment, but she often talked about how her office became happy whenever somebody brought their baby with them.
On May 29, 1948, she married Shirley E. "Jiggs" Alderson, and together they had six children over the next 14 years. Margie and Jiggs moved their family around the country as his job relocated them, and they finally settled in Cumberland in 1965. They were married for 57 years until his death in 2005. She proudly stated that the greatest accomplishment of her life was raising her six children.
Margaret was an active member of Saints Peter and Paul parish for 54 years. She volunteered at St. Anthony's Place at the Shrine of Saints Peter and Paul, and spent many years volunteering as a tax preparer for the elderly with the AARP Foundation Tax Aide. She also served on the Bereavement Committee at her church. She was an avid reader, an expert seamstress, and she enjoyed taking daily long walks into her 90's.
In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her four siblings, Joseph Fanning, Mary Bursley, Helen Kirsch, and Robert Fanning. She is loved and will be missed by her six children and their spouses, Shirley Eden (Larry), Patrick Alderson (Kathy), Chris Auerbach (Dave), Robert Alderson (Leslie), Michael Alderson (Melissa), and Gina Alderson (Bruce Dopler); 22 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, at 10 a.m. at the Shrine of Saints Peter and Paul. Interment will be in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests those wishing to honor Margaret's memory consider a donation to St. Anthony's Place Food Pantry c/o Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, 300 E Oldtown Road Ste #2, Cumberland, MD 21502.
