CUMBERLAND Marguerite Janet Smith, age 93 of Cumberland, died on Monday, Oct. 9, 2017 at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
She was born Dec. 21, 1923, in Lonaconing, and was the daughter of the late Ella L. Hill and Ernest A. Poland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Luther Grant Smith Sr.; and two brothers, Ernest Lee Poland and Karl William Poland. Marguerite was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Her survivors include two daughters, Katherine L. Congdon and son-in-law, Mark B. Congdon (Odessa, Fla.), and Frances A. Hunt (Cumberland); stepdaughter, Donna Soars (Tom's Brook, Va.) and stepson, Luther Grant Smith Jr. (Cincinnati, Ohio).
Marguerite graduated from Central High School in 1941 and also graduated from the Maryland General Hospital School of Nursing, Baltimore, in 1945. She volunteered for the Army Nurse Corps and was assigned to Army hospitals in Texas and Oklahoma. After the Army tour of duty, she worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Butler, Pa. When the Korean War began, she also served a tour of duty in Kobe, Japan. After discharge she worked in Allegany County hospitals as a private duty nurse, then worked for the Allegany County Health Dept. in 1965.
Marguerite worked at the Allegany County Nursing Home in Cumberland before she retired in 1983.
She was a member of Centre St. United Methodist Church, the Alumnae Assoc. of Maryland General Hospital School of Nursing, Barton Post 189 American Legion and the Martha Washington Chapter 10 Order of the Eastern Star, Lonaconing.
Marguerite chose to donate her body to the Anatomy Board of Maryland. The Cremains will be buried at Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.
A Memorial Service will be held at Centre St. United Methodist Church on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017, at 10 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Thomas E. Young Jr. Luncheon will be served at the church following the service.
