Marie's Story

Text size

Marie Alberta Bowers, 98, of Cumberland, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 12, 2018, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, where she was a patient. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles Edward Bowers, on June 4, 1986, and by her dear friend and companion, Mr. Dirk Vandenberg, Cresaptown, whom she met in 1989 and accompanied until his death in 2005.
She was born in Moorefield, W.Va. on April 18, 1919; the daughter of George Thomas Boswell and Nancy Catherine (Self) Boswell.
Marie was the youngest of nine siblings: six brothers and two sisters, all of whom have preceded her in death; namely, Mitchell, Mark, George, Arnold, Roy and Carl Boswell; and sisters, Anna Miley and Margaret Bloom.
Mrs. Bowers was a graduate of the first graduating class of Fort Hill High School, Class of 1937, a fact of which she was extremely proud. She often expressed how honored she was to be a member of the first class, responsible to select and vote on the school colors, the class ring design, and the name of the Sabre yearbook. She frequently reminisced about their Principal, Victor D. Heisey, who instilled pride in the class to feel honored to be the first class and impressed upon them that they were making history, even though they didn't realize it. After her graduation she attended Catherman's Business School.
Mrs. Bowers was a 50+ year member of what is now the New Covenant United Methodist Church, originally joining Kingsley Methodist Church which was consolidated with others to form New Covenant. She was an active member of her church and had a deep personal relationship with her Lord. She served the Church on the Administrative Board, taught Sunday School, and summer vacation Bible School. She was also President of the Faithful Workers class.
She was a life member of Sorority Beta Sigma Phi, Delta Masters Chapter and also belonged to Mountain Chapter #15, Order of the Eastern Star; Re Temple #118, Daughters of the Nile; The Woman's Civic Club of Cumberland; Allegany County Historical Society; Sheiks and Sheila's, which is the Shrine widows organization; and The Woman's Republican Club of Cumberland. Among one of Marie's most treasured accolades was being selected as the Outstanding Republican Woman of the Year, 2008. She also served for many years on the Allegany County Board of Elections.
Mrs. Bowers was also an extremely caring, compassionate woman, and routinely worked personally and discreetly, behind the scenes, to assist those less fortunate than herself. Although she sought no recognition, and preferred it not be known, she was especially aggressive to aid others during the holiday season.
She retired from the office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court for Allegany County as Deputy Clerk in 1985.
Marie is survived by her only son, C. Thomas Bowers, and wife, Teri, Cape Coral, Fla.; and grandson, John Glancy and wife, Courtney, Baltimore. Marie was close friends with many folks, but shared her most personal thoughts with two devoted friends for whom she cared deeply, Mrs. Irene McElfish, Kennesaw, Ga., who preceded Marie in death, and Mrs. Betty Armstrong, Cumberland, who was her friend and confidant until her final days.
The family would also like to extend their gratitude and heartfelt thanks for their care and compassion for Marie to the Two Rear Staff at the Cumberland Healthcare Center (formerly the Golden Living Center) and to the Nurses and direct care staff of the 5 South-High Level Care Unit, and the 7 North Nursing Unit, Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, who compassion and dedication made this most difficult time bearable. Likewise, the years of caring support, friendship, and love demonstrated by Mrs. Mary Jo Vandenberg-Wolters and Mrs. Carol Mason-Presley will forever be remembered and cherished by Marie's family.
