Mary Belle Bennett Mary Belle Bennett, 93, of Fort Ashby, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018 at The Dawnview Center.
Born Dec. 4, 1924 in Alaska, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Rosa Pyles.
She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Teddy H. Bennett in 2002; a brother, John Pyles; and her sisters, Mildred Ullery, Leona Lechliter, Evelyn Pyles, and Dorothy Reel.
Mary Belle was Valedictorian, class of 1942, Fort Ashby High School.
She worked at the Celanese Corporation from 1942-1947.
On June 14, 1947, she married Ted Bennett.
She was a life-long member of Berean Independent Baptist Church, a devout Christian woman, and a member of the choir.
Mary Belle joined the Fort Ashby Extension Homemakers in 1970. She served many years as reporter, vice-president, and president. She was Mineral County Homemaker of the Year in 1990 and Mineral County Belle in 1995.
She was an expert seamstress and quilt maker, who along with her cousin Louise Wagoner and others, made many quilts over the years for personal use, gifts, and re-sale.
She also enjoyed deer hunting, having harvested many over her life time.
Mary Belle was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and homemaker. Along with her husband, Ted, they ran a small farm on Dennison Hollow Road.
Survivors include her son, Kenny Bennett and wife Linda, Fort Ashby; two grandchildren, Sean Bennett, wife Susan and their children Matthew and Hunter Bennett, and Lucien Bennett, and his children, Reagan and Keegan Bennett; one brother, Raymond "Buddy" Pyles, Short Gap; and several nieces and nephews. She also helped raise Myron Miller, Baltimore, and John Pyles, N.C.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Inc., Route 28, Fort Ashby on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018, from 6 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home, with the Reverend Richard Riley, officiating.
Interment will be in Fort Ashby Cemetery.
