Mary's Story

Mary Teresa Bittinger, 103, of Cumberland, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, at the Cumberland Healthcare Center.
She was born May 25, 1914 in Hoyes, to the late Christina (McGettigan) and William George Mattingly, Sr., and was a descendent of Meshach Browning. In addition, she was also preceded in death by her husband, F. Harold "Ted" Bittinger in 1992; son, William H. Bittinger in 1990; two infant sons; sisters, Irene Johnson and Kathryn Carroll; and brothers, William G. Mattingly, Jr., and Owen C. Mattingly.
Teresa is survived by a daughter, Mary Elaine Deneen and husband Walter "Bart", Cumberland; daughter-in-law, Faye Bittinger Hetrick, Oakland; granddaughters, Susan Deneen Nines and husband Mark, Archbold, Ohio and Sarasota, FL, and Christa Deneen Tipton and husband C.L., Cumberland; grandsons, Michael H. Bittinger and wife Rebecca, Oakland, and Steven D. Bittinger and wife Monica, Va.; great-grandchildren, Holly Nines St. John and husband Joshua, Alyssa Nines, Orion Nines, Hunter Tipton, Dominic Bittinger, Callie Bittinger, Rylan Bittinger, and Brennen Bittinger; and great-great-grandson, Judah St. John.
Teresa graduated from Accident High School. She was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, Oakland, and the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She attended Our Lady of the Mountains, St. Mary's Parish while residing with her daughter in Cumberland.
Teresa enjoyed quilting with her friends at Oak Park Church of the Brethren, Oakland, crocheting afghans, music, reading, and her grandchildren. Everyone loved her homemade apple pies and ham pot pie.
Teresa's family would like to thank everyone who cared for her at the Cumberland Healthcare Center throughout her stay.
Family will receive friends at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 208 S 4th Street, Oakland, MD, on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018, from Noon to 1 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at the church, on Wednesday, following visitation.
Interment will be in Oakland Memorial Garden.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 1050 E Industrial Blvd #3, Cumberland, MD 21502, or to Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, 300 East Oldtown Road, Ste #2, Cumberland, MD 21502.
