Mary's Story

Text size

Mary M. Goss, 64, of Cumberland died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018, at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, surrounded by family and friends.
Born June 7, 1953, in Cumberland, Mary was the daughter of the late Raymond and Helen Goss. In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her beloved brother, Raymond Goss.
Mary went to St. Mary's School and graduated from Bishop Walsh in 1971. Mary continued her education at Allegany College of Maryland, where she earned her associate's degree. Mary was a dedicated worker at various places throughout her life, including the post office, St. Mary's daycare, and Hallmark. Mary was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary's Church, Cumberland.
Mary's most important job was being a mom. Mary singlehandedly did the job of a mother and father for her daughter, Kari. She selflessly lived her life for Kari, giving up her own needs and wants to do all that she could for Kari. Mary was a homeroom mother and Girl Scout leader. She took Kari to dancing lessons, piano lessons, and every youth group activity and event. Mary cheered Kari on at every cross country meet, track meet, and high school event. Mary helped Kari go to college and tirelessly drove her to and from each day. Mary will always be Kari's best friends and number one supporter. She was always there to lend a listening ear no matter the day or time. Mary was so grateful when Kari married Mark. She took him in as a son and shared her support with him. Mary continued to cheer Kari and Mark on at each race and milestone they shared on their journey. Mary loved her furry grandkids, Mo, Macy, Happee, Smylee, Maddux, and Murphy.
Mary leaves behind her daughter, Kari Harbaugh and husband, Mark, Cumberland; in-laws, the Harbaugh and Dawson families; "adopted" families, the Llewellyns and the Brewers; and her furbabies, Gracie and Lucy. Mary was blessed to have a strong support circle of lifelong friends.
The family expresses their gratitude to Allison Perkins for all the care and support she provided to Mary and her family. Mary is also survived by her brother's family.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Friday, March 2, 2018, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Memorial services will immediately follow at 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in her name be made to their local animal shelter, since Mary was an avid animal lover.
Condolences for the family may be left at www.ScarpelliFH.com.
