Mary Catherine Landis, 84, of Cumberland, formerly of Ft. Ashby, W.Va., passed away Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, at Cumberland Healthcare Center.
Born Feb. 27, 1933, in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Vista Dennison. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eston Clyde Landis; her first husband, Jennings Alford Kesner; and her sister, Stella May Barnes.
Mary graduated from Mineral County High School in 1951. She went on to work at Kinney Shoes for at least 20 years. She was a member of Springfield Assembly of God Church in Springfield, W.Va., and loved singing in the church choir. When she wasn't singing in the church choir, she lent her voice to the Cottage Singers, another group in the Springfield area.
Mary's favorite pastime was working in her garden. Every spring, her garden would be full of herbs, vegetables, and beautiful flowers. Her son, William, even hauled rocks to her home and helped her to create breathtaking rock paths. A self-sufficient woman, Mary always canned her garden's bounty to make sure her family was well fed. She was always cooking and baking for her family. In fact, it was almost an offensive act to not take home as many cookies as possible from her house on Christmas. She adored her family and spent as much time with them as possible.
A woman of many interests, Mary loved going to yard sales, collecting glassware and antiques, and traveling. She also had a fondness for cats.
Surviving Mary are her son, William J. Kesner and wife, Tina, Oldtown; step-daughter, Debbie Walizer and husband, Rick, Ft. Ashby; grandchildren, Troy Kesner and wife, Erica, Slanesville, W.Va., Amy Ditto and husband, Bradley, Frostburg, and Angela Ravenscroft Dolly and husband, Justin, Flintstone; step-grandson, Trent Walizer; great-grandchildren, Dylan Kesner, Cheyanne Kesner, Abigail Ditto, Zoe Ditto, Madelyn Ditto, Bryson Troutman, Olivia Dolly, and Conor Dolly; sister, Elva Jane Hughes, Kansas, and Judy Yaider and husband, William "Sonny," Springfield; brother, William Dennison and wife, Margie, Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
