CUMBERLAND Nancy L. Hansel, 86, of Cumberland, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Nancy was born on July 31, 1931, in Dunbar, Pa. She was the daughter of the late George A. and Gertrude (Dunaway) Largent. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald E. Hansel; son, Donald R. Hansel; brother, Donald "Buddy" Largent and his wife, JoAnn; and brother-in-law, Herman Cunningham.
Nancy was a graduate of Allegany High School, class of 1949. Following high school, she attended the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1952. Nancy was employed as a nurse for 35 years at Memorial Hospital. She was a member of LaVale United Methodist Church, Allegany County Nurses Association, and was an active member of the Allegany Class of 1949 reunion committee.
Nancy was a woman of many traits - protector, caregiver, listener, talker, lover, fighter, sports enthusiast, Country Club Mall walker, and card shark. She was always everyone's go-to. When in doubt or in need of a smile, everyone went to Nancy. She just had a way of easing everyone's uncertainty and assuring them that everything was going to be okay. Her grandchildren were her "pride and joy." She loved going to ball games. The highlight of her day was watching them play ball. Nancy was an avid mall walker. Everyone knew they could find her sitting at Chick-fila at the mall with all of her friends, Polly Welsh, Doris Stotler, and Shirley Rose. Her Tuesday nights were occupied; those were her nights to be a card shark with her bridge ladies, Trish, Maryland and Beechy. In her book, she always won. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing her was blessed in many ways. She had a way of touching everyone's life. There is not one person who would say anything negative about her. She was an amazing woman who lived life to the fullest. She will be incredibly missed by so many people, family, friends, nursing coworkers, and even people who just met her in passing. Her light shined so bright, her heart was so big, and she loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure.
Nancy is survived by children, Steven T. Hansel and wife, Brenda, Cumberland, and Amy B. Bradford and husband, Jim, Cumberland; grandchildren, Jason T.
