Norma's Story

Text size

FORT ASHBY, W.Va. Norma Jean (Evans) Hayes, 85, of Fort Ashby, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at The Dawnview Center.
Norma was a very positive person. She was an inspiration to all. As in her Christian faith, she not only talked the talk but walked the walk. Her two famous sayings were "It will all work out" and "This, too, shall pass." She often said them in the remaining months of her illness.
Born April 5, 1932 in Alaska, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Arlie Randolph Evans and Dorothy (Alt) Evans Niner.
She was also preceded in death by her husband of almost 60 years, Erman Paul "Hoppy" Hayes; a son-in-law, Edward "Eddie" M. Sisk; and a brother-in-law, Donald Hartman Sr.
She was a graduate of Fort Ashby High School, Class of 1950.
Norma was the co-owner of Evans Dairy Dip in Fort Ashby for 62 years. She also worked at G.C. Murphy Company in Keyser. She was a member of Grace Fellowship of Mineral Baptist Church.
Her passion was her sewing, which she started at the age of ten. She continued sewing throughout her entire life until her illness would not allow her to do so. She made many friends with her gift of sewing and truly enjoyed all of them.
We are glad she was able to fulfill her bucket list and enjoy a cruise and several other trips with her sister, Darlena. We are especially thankful for the special care given to her by her sister, Darlena, in the final months of her illness.
The family also appreciates the staff and caregivers at the Dawnview Center for the care and compassion given to her.
Survivors include her two daughters, Pamela J. Shaffer and husband, Blake, Fort Ashby, and Paula S. Porter and husband, Les, LaVale; her son, Dennis P. Hayes and wife, Judy, Fort Ashby; one sister, Darlena Hartman; one brother, Dale Evans; six grandchildren, Robert Hayes and wife, Stacy, Nathan Hayes, Brad Sisk, Tarrah Maistros, Jenna Porter, and Alyssa Porter; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at Grace Fellowship of Mineral Baptist Church on Friday from 5-8 p.m., and Saturday from noon until 1 p.m.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the church, with Pastor Kris Lengel, officiating.
Interment will be in Mineral Baptist Church Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Blake Shaffer, Brad Sisk, Robert Hayes, Larry Alt, Doug Rinard and Dale Evans. Honorary pallbearers will be Dowaine Weaver and Chuck Gattens.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mineral Baptist Church, P.O. Box 140, Fort Ashby, WV 26719.
We rejoice together knowing her faith and hope has been realized as she enjoys eternal life with her Savior, Jesus Christ.
