Raymond's Story

CUMBERLAND Raymond W. "Ray" Welsh, 78, passed away on Friday, Dec. 8, 2017, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his wife and family.
He was born Dec. 29, 1938, and was raised in the South Cumberland area known as Little Egypt where he was known as "Mordie." He was the son of the late Mildred "Buck" Welsh Arbogast and step-father, John Arbogast.
Ray was a 1957 graduate of Fort Hill High School. He was also a member of the Maryland National Guard for 13 years.
Ray was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Woodmen of the World Lodge 6, United Commercial Travelers Council 209, the Auto Racing Club of Hagerstown (ARCH), and the South Cumberland Business Men's Association. He was also a member of the C.A.R.E. Committee, where he promoted the Cumberland Car Show for 35 years.
Ray was previously an announcer at the Cumberland Raceway for 18 years. At the age of 74, he still worked as a scorer at the Hagerstown Speedway. After retiring from Sears in 1996, he enjoyed time spent with his family and his racing family and friends, following his grandchildren in sports, especially Fort Hill sports, stock car racing, going to the Fort Hill class of 1957 luncheons, South Cumberland Business dinners, Sears retirees lunches, and playing slots at Rocky Gap and Charlestown. Ray was also a former member of the F.O.P Lodge, Fort Hill F Club, Cresaptown Eagles, and American Legion Post 13.
He is survived by his childhood sweetheart, Barbara (Valentine) Welsh. They have been married 59 years and he is survived by their three children, Donna Rose and husband, George, Terry Frankenberry and husband, Rob; and son, Scott Welsh. They have six grandchildren, Dan Rose and wife, LaDawn, Steve Rose and wife, Kayla, Dakota Welsh and wife, Elizabeth, Courtney Borland and husband, Josh, Samantha Frankenberry, Colin Welsh and girlfriend, Kayla. Nine great-grandchildren, Hailee and Dylan Rose, Sophie and Lola Rose, Taylynn and Beckham Borland, Isaiah and Weston Welsh, Gabriel Welsh. He is also survived by a special cousin, Wayne Crawford. Ray is already missed by his three-legged cat Sonny.
Pall bearers will be Dan, Steve, Dakota, Colin, Josh and family friend, Pat Mulan.
As Ray always said "Think Sunshine" and "GO BIG RED!!"
Family will receive friends at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., on Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Harold R. McClay Jr. officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
