Rev. John's Story
CUMBERLAND The Reverend John L. Ford, 78, of Cumberland, went to be with his Lord peacefully on the morning of Friday, June 9, 2017, after a lengthy period of illness.
The Rev. Ford was born in Baltimore, on July 2, 1938, the oldest son of Lewis K. and Alice Ford. He was married to Janet Sue (Walter) Ford for 30 years.
He is survived by their two children, Shirley Ruth Davis, of Cumberland and her two twin sons, George Walter Davis IV and Wesley Kaiser Davis, who were a constant source of joy and happiness to him. He is also survived by his son, Kenneth J. Ford and daughter-in-law, Brenna Ford, of Baltimore.
The Reverend Ford was a minister for nearly 40 years before his retirement with the United Methodist and United Brethren denominations. He began his career at Gills United Methodist Church in Lutherville. In his career he faithfully served the congregations at the following churches Hereford United Methodist Church, Hereford, Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, Parkton, Wiseburg United Methodist Church, White Hall, Whiteford United Methodist Church, Whiteford, Blairton and Greensburg United Methodist Churches, Martinsburg, W.Va., Mapleside & Melvin United Methodist Churches, Cumberland, Calvary United Methodist Church, Ridgeley, W.Va., Clarksburg United Brethren Church, Clarksburg, W.Va., Underwood United Brethren, Oakland.
After retirement, John continued to serve and worship with his church families at Winchester Avenue Christian Church, Martinsburg, and Bethany House of the Lord Cumberland. Throughout his life, the things he enjoyed the most were spending time with his family and attending church functions.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., in Cumberland, on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Tom Young officiating.
