Richard L. "Dick" Michael, 81, of LaVale, passed away Sunday, July 23, 2017, at his residence, surrounded by his family.
Born Feb. 14, 1936, in Luke, he was the son of the late Raymond and Daisy (Whitacre) Michael. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Michael, and brother-in-law, Carroll "Red" Helm.
Richard was an United States Air Force veteran and served his country from 1956 to 1962. He was awarded the National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He retired from Corman Construction Company (Columbia) as a superintendent in 1999 before working at Wal-Mart in LaVale for 15 years in the sporting goods department. He was a member of the Centre St. United Methodist Church in Cumberland.
Richard loved his family, hunting - especially on Thanksgiving Day with his father, NASCAR racing, the Washington Redskins, blue grass and country music, playing his harmonica, laughter, and life!
He leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Margaret A. "Marg" (Roderick) Michael; two children, Barry L. Michael and wife, Debra, of Norfolk, Va., and Charmaine Green and husband, Johnnie, of Austell, Ga.; sister, Mary Ellen Helm of Cumberland; brother, Gene Michael and wife, Iola of Burkburnette, Texas; six grandchildren, Andrea (Ryan) Robison, Aaron (Niki) Michael, James Coleman, Brandon Michael, Ryan (Jennie) Michael, and Jeremy Michael; nine great-grandchildren, Hallie, Emma, Lydia, Paxton, Andrew, Landon, Parker, Blake, and Carly; and two brothers-in-law, Douglas Jennings of Ranson, W.Va., and Harold Jennings of Keyser, W.Va.
The family would like to thank Dr. Huma Shakil, Kris Crabtree, and Morgan Houser of Western Maryland Health System Hospice for the care and compassion given to Richard and his family during his illness.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday, July 26, 2017, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
A funeral service will immediately follow at 1 p.m. with Pastor Thomas Young officiating.
Interment will be in Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap. Military honors will be accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
