Robert E. Reiber, 81, residing in Sandusky, Ohio, passed away Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 14, 2018, at Stein Hospice Care Center peacefully surrounded by his loving family.
Bob was born on April 6, 1936, in Meyersdale, Pa., to the late Harry and Anna (Elkins) Reiber.
Bob graduated in 1954 from Allegany High School in Cumberland where Earle Bruce attended as well. Bob was All-City in football. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1958 from Fairmont University in Fairmont, W.Va. He was an All-Conference End in football. Earle Bruce offered Bob a coaching job in Salem, Ohio, which he accepted and remained for two years. In 1960, Coach Bruce accepted a job in Sandusky, and asked Bob to go with him. Bob taught history and coached offensive and defensive tackles. During the 1960s, he was also an assistant coach in basketball, wrestling and track. Bob attended Bowling Green State University and received his Master's Degree in Education Administration and Certification in Guidance and Counseling. He was a counselor for 25 years, retired from coaching in 1978 after 18 years and retired from education in 1992 after 34 years.
Bob was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Fireland's Area Runner's Club, serving as treasurer and vice president, the Sandusky Boosters Club and Firelands Photo Club. He enjoyed photography, running, traveling, hiking and white water rafting. He thoroughly enjoyed anything related to sports and volunteered to assist with Perkins Track. Bob has run four marathons, his first one at age 50.
Bob is survived by his wife, Sandra (Nickel) Reiber, whom he married on July 8, 1960. He is also survived by his daughter, Traci (Richard) Thompson of Georgie; sons, David (Bethany) Reiber of Monroeville, Pa., and Eric Reiber of Sandusky; grandchildren, Mindy, Katelyn, Chris, Austin, Madison and Brandon; brother, Kenneth Reiber of Washington, D.C.; and numerous other relatives.
Friends may call on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Groff Funeral Homes and Crematory, 1607 E Perkins Ave., Sandusky.
Memorial services will be held Friday, Feb. 23, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist, 214 E. Jefferson St., Sandusky, with the Rev. Douglas Winner officiating.
Interment will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
