GRANTSVILLE Ronald James Kohler (aka Poppa), 74, of Grantsville, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, at his home.
Born May 26, 1943, in Meadville, Pa., he was the son of the late James and Grace (McMurdy) Kohler Goral. He is also preceded in death by one sister, Karen Fisher.
Mr. Kohler was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, career salesperson, lifelong Steelers fan and had an unforgettable personality.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Carolyn Vera Kohler; two sisters, Midge Bunch and Victoria Goral Benefield; a daughter, Shelley Wise and her fiancé, Shaun Firster; three sons, Brian Kohler, Kevin Powell, and Christopher Kohler and his wife, Jennifer Kohler; and six grandchildren, Kyle Wise, Haley Wise, Jordan Kohler, Breez Powell, Addison Kohler and Cooper Kohler.
Ron graduated from Franklin High School, class of 1961 then immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he traveled the world serving his country until 1966. During his military service, Ron served on the USS Okinawa and was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for campaigns in the Cuban Crisis and Dominican Republic Area.
Throughout his life, Ron thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and breeding German Shepherds. During the Autumn seasons, Ron could be found watching (and yelling at) the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sundays and Penn State Football on Saturdays. However, his favorite place during the summer was the Honi Honi at Deep Creek Lake, where family and friends would join him in dancing, injecting witty banter and creating great memories.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, on Saturday, Jan. 6,2018, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018, at 10 a.m. with Shannon Newsome officiating.
