Russell's Story

PETERSBURG, W.Va. Russell Vernon Hedrick, Jr., age 85, of Petersburg, died on Sunday, May 6, 2018, at Grant Rehabilitation & Care Center in Petersburg.
He was born March 31, 1933, in Petersburg, and was a son of the late Russell V. and Minnie C. (Harman) Hedrick. In addition to his parents Russ was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jane Brill and his brother, Gary Allen Hedrick.
Russ was a 1951 graduate of Petersburg High School. He attended Potomac State College and WVU where he was a member of the WVU marching band. Russ lived a full life with his world travels in his young years and recovering from alcoholism and giving his time helping hundreds in recovery. Russ started the first AA Open Meeting in Petersburg. He had won that battle and had it down to 30 years, so many hours and so many minutes. The Russ Hedrick Resource Center was dedicated in his honor that his work will continue.
Russ was an Operating Room Technician at Grant Memorial Hospital for several years. He was a council member from June 13, 1995 - Nov. 6, 1995 and served as Mayor of Petersburg from Nov. 6, 1995 - July 31, 2001. He was a member of the Petersburg Masonic Lodge No. 145 A.F. & A. M. and Main Street United Methodist Church.
Russ is survived by one sister, Judith Ann Harman (Wm. Doug) of Morgantown, W.Va.; his nieces, Amy L. Ratliff (Mark) of Upper Tract, and Pamela J. Iames (Chris) of Cresaptown; his nephews, Eric T Hedrick (Lelia) of Harrisonburg, Va. and Perry M. Harman (Jackie) of Morgantown, and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
Russ donated his body to the West Virginia Human Gift Registry in Morgantown.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at noon at Main Street United Methodist Church in Petersburg with the Rev. Nathan Epling and the Rev. Ann W. Harrison officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to services.
