Sandra "Sandy"'s Story

Text size

CUMBERLAND Sandra "Sandy" Karen McGee (Taylor-Hudson) went home to her Lord and Savior in heaven on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, in the home she had been sharing with her daughter, Deb Crawford, and family since 2015. She had a cat in bed with her and was surrounded by her books and pictures of the past.
Sandy was born in Cumberland, on Sept. 13, 1939, at the old Allegany Hospital to her loving parents, the late James Carlton (Mickey) McGee Jr. and the late L. Katherine (Kate) Smith McGee.
Amongst those preceding her in death are her infant grandson, Caleb Ian James Whitacre; and her wonderful special aunt, Louise Smith Mears DelaGrange, on whose birthday Sandy was born.
A proud graduate from Allegany High School, class of 1957, Sandy was involved in many activities as one of the original Alcoettes, which later became the Arrowettes, was voted the biggest flirt in her senior class, worked on the Allegewi yearbook staff, and Alcohi Mirror newspaper staff in her junior and senior years and in many other activities while in high school.
She was instrumental in beginning her graduating class monthly luncheons in 2008 and had worked on several of the class reunion committees.
Her love of photography, music, plants and animals remained with her to the end. In recent years her ability to continue with her other passions such as reading, working on her computer, traveling, history, scrapbooking, crafts, and going to beaches for shell collecting, had not been possible, but she still had fond memories of all these activities.
Sandy was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cumberland. She was baptized and confirmed in her church, and taught Bible School there from 1964 through 1970, as well as a substitute Sunday school teacher, and was married twice in this church. The church was built with the help of her "elders" from Germany, and Smith Street next to the church was named in honor of the many members of her Smith family of yesteryear and their dedication to the building of the church.
Sandy is survived by her children, Michael T. (Buddy) Taylor, Ridgeley, W.Va., and wife, Suzanne, Debra Karen (Deb) Taylor Crawford and husband, Gary of Manassas, Va., Kathlyn Michele (Kathi) Taylor, Jacksonville, Fla., Krista Ashley Megan Porter, Cumberland, and Kaitlin Nicole Louise (Niki) Hudson Binghampton, N.Y. Also, she is survived by her grandchildren, who gave her the greatest gift that God could have given her, Siearre Leigh Jones, Alec Michael Taylor, Kara Marie Crawford, Marissa Noel (Missy) Taylor, Arianna Skye Whitacre, Bayleigh Grace Whitacre, and Daelyn Nicole Michelle Porter. Sandy often said she felt her children and grandchildren were her reason for being put on this earth and that they were the lights of her life.
To her surviving friends Sandy wanted you to know that you brightened her life by just being a part of it and being there in all the good times as well as the bad. Thank you for all the memories!
Friends will be received at Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home.
