Sarah's Story

Sarah Leona (Reagan) Newman, 85, of Cumberland, formerly of Mount Savage, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017, at her home.
Born on April 11, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Clement and Leona A. (Wolfe) Reagan. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Newman; daughter, Kathleen Newman; brother, Clement Reagan; and her four sisters, Catherine Rhoads, Mildred Clark Buckley, Eleanor Baker, and Mary Theresa Bruhn.
Sarah was a 1953 graduate of Allegany College School of Nursing and was one of the top students in her class. She retired from Sacred Heart Hospital after 40 years of service, known as an outstanding professional in her field and instrumental in changing the same day/short stay program. Sarah also had a passion for singing. She performed in the Choral Society on many occasions. Sarah's first solo was at Christmas Eve Mass singing, O' Holy Night; it was breathtaking. Sarah and her husband, Thomas, met dancing in Frostburg and never stopped dancing for 48 years until his passing in 2003; married at St. Patrick's Church in Mount Savage on July 9, 1955. They lived in Mount Savage for many years, where they raised their six children, Patrick, Annalee, Ellene, Thomas, Kathleen and Colleen.
Sarah is survived by her children, Patrick Newman, Annalee Ostendorf and husband, Thomas, her children, Sarah, and James R. Nigh Jr., Ellene Newman and her children, Christine Regotti and Marisa Carroll, Thomas M. Newman and wife, Sharon, and their children, Amber and Nicole Newman, Colleen Briehof and husband, Joe, and her children, Bernadette Golt, Theresa Storm, Katelen Haley, and Garrett Storm; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jed, and Alexandra Golt, and two more on the way; and a very close and special friend, Allen Emerick.
Family will receive friends at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Friday, Sept. 8, 2017, from 6 to 8 p.m.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Church, 15706 St. Patrick's Church Road, Mount Savage, on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017, at 10 a.m.
Inurnment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Mount Savage, where she will be laid to rest at the foot of her husband.
Friends and family will be received afterward at Tom and Annalee Ostendorf's home, 3295 Frostburg Road, Frostburg.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to St. Anthony Food Pantry, c/o Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, 300 East Oldtown Road, Suite 2, Cumberland, MD 21502.
